Prof. Jocelyne Bloch M.D. is neurosurgeon, Professor in the neurosurgical department of the University Hospital Lausanne (CHUV) and Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lausanne (UNIL), Adjunct Professor within the NeuroX institute at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), and director of the Defitech Center for Interventional Neurotherapies (.NeuroRestore).
She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of UNIL in December 1994, and then obtained her neurosurgical degree in 2002. She specialized in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, which allowed her to develop an extensive expertise in the deployment of neuromodulation therapies for movement disorders, pain and epilepsy. She leads the functional neurosurgical unit at the CHUV.
Very active in experimental medicine and translational neuroscience, she nourishes a passion for the development of neurotherapies involving neurosurgical interventions, and for advancing neurotechnologies in neuromodulation, neuroregeneration, and cell therapy. She seeks to gather all these therapeutic strategies under a common umbrella to maximize recovery of patients presenting with neurological impairments. Together with Prof. G. Courtine, she founded the Defitech Center for Interventional Neurotherapies, named .NeuroRestore.
.NeuroRestore is a research, innovation and treatment center that develops and applies bioengineering strategies involving neurosurgical interventions to restore neurological functions. In 2014, she and G. Courtine co-founded ONWARD Medical with the aim to translate the neurotechnologies developed at .NeuroRestore into clinical treatments for spinal paralyisis.
Jocelyne Bloch received many awards, including the 2019 Tasker Prize from World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in recognition for her research and innovation in the field of neuromodulation and spinal cord repair. The results of her research have been published in numerous original articles by Science and Nature journals, and broadly publicized in print and broadcast media across the world.
