In the first ever Women in Science Switzerland event, Dr. Hernandez spoke about the revolution in biology due to genomics and its major impact on health and knowledge. The fiels of biology is undergoing a major transformation with the development of tools that allow rapid and inexpensive determination of genome structure and function. The study of genomics reveals, ont he one hand the connections between all living species and, on the other hand whats one individual is different from another within the same species. It also reveals the complexity of the mechanisms that ensure that the genome is under proper control.

Dr Nouria Hernandez is the current Rector of the University of Lausanne, formerly Director of the Center for Integrative Genomics at UNIL, Dr Hernandez directs a team of international scientists and 12 research groups providing cutting edge research and educational programmes. Dr Hernandez works on RNA and a very complex gene expression which leads ultimately to the process of life. Dr Hernandez was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute full investigator. Dr Hernandez gave a primer on genetics at this first conference.
